Osprey Oars HISTORY TIMELINE

Riverview’s Women’s V4+, Lauren Boudreaux, Katrin Haertel, Stefanie Sobotka, Amanda Kyatt and Katie Durkin traveled to Camden, N.J. and won the Scholastic Rowing Association Championship (referred to as the Scholastic Nationals), defeating Governor Simcoe, a much older and more experienced crew from Canada that had just won the Stotesbury Regatta the week before. The Canadian boat had three fifth year seniors while we rowed with a junior, two sophomores and a freshman with a sophomore coxswain.

The Men’s crew placed Bill Plifka and Grant Earl on the Junior National team that represented the US in Munich, Germany. Bill’s 4+ placed 5th in the Junior Worlds. Grant rowed in the pair with Cameron Gridley from Winter Park and placed 13th.

In the fall head races, the women’s four won the high school medal at the Charles and the men’s four placed third among the high schools. A week later at the Schuylkill, the women’s four won again and the men’s four placed second behind the Naval Academy. The fall season ended with a great performance at the Hooch where Riverview won gold in both the Women’s and Men’s Varsity Eights.

The spring season got off to a rocket of a start when Riverview won the points trophy for the third year in a row in the Erg Sprints at FIT.

Riverview knew it was going to be a strong year at the Mayor’s Cup where the club won five gold, two silver medals and a bronze medal competing against 15 other clubs. The men’s 8+ crushed perennial powerhouse Winter Park by two boat lengths and the women’s 4+ dominated their race with a 13 second margin of victory.

At the President’s Cup the crew continued in its tradition of challenging the collegiate crews. The girls 4+, the only high school entry, won its heat and took fourth in the finals against Yale, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rollins, Jacksonville, Miami, Florida, FIT and seven other collegiate crews.

Then the club dominated at Miami, Sarasota Sprints, FIRA and Boone Invitational. At the Governor’s Cup, the women’s four petitioned to be permitted to race against the colleges only to have their request denied. However, they were allowed to race as an exhibition entry and won. Then they stood by amused as the gold medal was awarded to the second place finisher.

At the State Championships, the varsity crews nearly pulled of a clean sweep of the four heavyweight sweep events, winning the MV8+, WV8+ and WV4+. The Men’s V4+ had to settle for second behind Winter Park.

The team finished its third regular season by sweeping the Southeastern Championships in Atlanta, entering nine boats in eight events and winning eight gold medals in the MV8+, MV4+, MJV8+, MJV4+, WV8+, WV4+, WJV8+ and WJV4+ and then adding a bronze medal with their “B” entry in the MJV4+.
